How do scientists know if something is alive? There are certain characteristics that the scientific community uses to determine whether something could be considered living. On first observation, yeast does not look like a typical living thing. In this activity, students will hypothesize about yeast and then test to see if their hypothesis is correct. Using this information they will be able to come to a conclusion to the question of whether yeast is alive.
